Safe Driver Careers Recognized by Frito-Lay
Training and a Culture of Safety Produce 70% Decline in Collisions
09/22/2011 - When the backbone of your food distribution program rests on the efforts of hundreds of over-the-road (OTR) drivers in the U.S. and Canada, striving for safety is critical. That's certainly the case for PepsiCo's Frito-Lay North America business unit.
According to Bill Simkins, manager of National Fleet Safety for the company, "Frito-Lay owns and operates one of the largest private fleets in North America. It's also one of the safest because of our (OTR Driver) training programs and the world-class drivers who make safety their number one priority." To highlight the company's commitment to safety, Frito-Lay recognizes drivers when they reach one million, two million and three million accident-free miles in their driving career.
Frito-Lay says it takes an OTR driver approximately a dozen years to reach the million mile mark and it is proud to have more than 550 active Million Milers transporting their products across North American roads. This dedicated group maintains their superior driving skills through extensive skills training including maneuvering practice courses, practicing on driving simulators and participating in the team collaborations which inform the company's best practices and contribute to a culture of safety.
In a press release today, the company announced the 2011 Million Milers who, along with their families, will be recognized by top Frito-Lay executives at their annual gala held at the company's headquarters in Plano, Texas. In addition to improving team morale, Frito-Lay's safe driver efforts have produced a 70% decline in collisions since 1999.
The staff of FoodAndBeveragePeople.com agrees with Simkins in commending the following inductees "for their dedication, and for keeping themselves and the families we share the roads with every day accident-free."
